Sushi Nishi-ya

GLENDALE

The legend of “Valley Sushi” continues with Sushi Nishi-ya.  While the Valley Sushi slogan may be overstated in this blog, the world needs to know it’s actually a thing…  Having been open since the 80’s, Sushi Nishi-ya is all about the fish and certainly not the glamour.  This restaurant has survived recessions, riots, and fires for a reason… they know what they are doing.

The omakase is a superb exploration of fresh simplicity, what for many of us is the draw of sushi. Decades worth of fish market relationships seep into your taste buds exuding the incredible quality of each course served.   Don’t expect interpretative takes for a tasting menu, but simply nigiri with the occasional cooked shellfish or sashimi.  This formula has worked for the husband and wife run establishment for decades and bless them for not changing it up.

I will say, the omakase is not for the faint of heart regarding quantity.  Each course is bountiful and your typical single piece of nigiri is subsidized by a twin.  If wanting to be conservative, come at lunch and order a la carte sitting away from the sushi bar!

Overall: Driving to Glendale might seem like a road trip for those residing west of the 405, but don’t let the distance deter you… The sushi here is excellent.  (Quality: Very High – Variety: Good – Value: Average – Vibe: Average)
