Echigo

West LA

Being a resident of West LA I am a bit biased to the Sushi joints nearby. That bias by no means is unjustified.  Echigo finds itself located at the 2nd floor end-cap space in an old shopping center, we are off to a good start here...

Don’t be fooled by the exterior, Echigo serves traditional high-quality sushi that can stand toe to toe with anybody.   I find this to be a great lunch spot with a special running about $15 (5 pieces of nigiri and a hand roll. Won’t fill you up, but won’t break the bank).  The regular lunch omakase, runs closer to $35 with closer to 8 pieces of select nigiri and the hand roll (dinner is about $50).  I am not one to bash on the Nozawa machine, but I prefer going to a no thrills restaurant like this, dishing affordable set menus over the likes of Sugar Fish.  While at Echigo, observe the strong selection of local and imported fish beyond the lunch special.  Seasonal selections are taken into account as many imports arriving in their kitchen won’t be there the following month. A personal favorite cut is the Japanese Barracuda which is prepared to tender excellence.

Call me a sucker for strip mall sushi, but this place is solid….

Overall: Very solid Omakase style meals but don’t be disappointed by the unassuming interior! (Quality: Very Good – Variety: Good – Value: Average – Vibe: Sub Average)
