Go’s Mart
Canoga Park
Unbeknownst to me, this long-standing restaurant tucked away in Canoga Park was at one time a fish market. Lucky for us craving fish on rice, husband and wife owners Tsuyoshi and Chiemi Kawano decided to commit their efforts into converting the space into a full-fledged seafood dining heaven.
While the interior was without a question underwhelming, it quickly became apparent why Go’s Mart has for so many years been the subject of local folklore. Tsuyoshi aka “Go” offers an unconventional omakase of simply telling the patron to stop him when they are full. Course after course the barren walls and plain interior start to fill with the energy of a savant fishmonger working at his beautiful artistic craft. Seasonal selections range from the famous “white fish platter” to ocean trout smoked in house and rare delights reminiscent of my time in Tokyo. The hairy crab and monkfish liver courses were two of the purest pieces of sushi that I have been lucky enough to taste.
There are not many places in Los Angeles where you walk through the doors of a seemingly unassuming establishment and are teleported into a world class gastronomic experience.
Go’s Mart represents everything that drives my passion for sushi, a cuisine that has the power to make one truly immerse themselves in their senses and enter a meditative culinary state.
